Doing Double Duty
Most vehicles are built with a clear purpose from the start. Some are designed to haul equipment, some need to cross rough ground, and others simply have to make everyday travel easier or more affordable. Every now and then, though, a vehicle takes on a second identity that becomes much bigger than its original role. Movies, television, motorsports, cultural movements, and changing tastes can turn an ordinary workhorse into something people recognize immediately. These 20 vehicles started with one job, then became famous for something completely different.
1. Volkswagen Beetle
The Beetle was created as simple, affordable transportation, and its postwar production helped put millions of people behind the wheel. In the United States, its compact size, rounded body, and easygoing character later appealed to the counterculture of the 1960s, as it looked nothing like the large, chrome-covered cars filling American roads at the time.
2. Volkswagen Type 2
Volkswagen developed the Type 2 as a flexible transporter that could carry passengers, cargo, or equipment for businesses. Its roomy interior, simple mechanical design, and accessible price later made it popular with members of the counterculture. Before long, the practical commercial van had become closely tied to music festivals, communal living, and the freedom of life on the road.

3. Classic Mini
The original Mini was engineered to take up very little road space while still giving passengers a useful amount of room inside. Its front-wheel-drive layout and quick, agile handling also made it surprisingly capable in motorsports. Mini Cooper S models won the Monte Carlo Rally in 1964, 1965, and 1967.
4. Citroën 2CV
The 2CV was developed as affordable, durable transportation for rural drivers. Its soft suspension made rough journeys more manageable. As the years passed, the car moved beyond its role as basic countryside transportation, becoming closely associated with the relaxed lifestyle of French motorists.
5. Willys MB
The Willys MB was built for military service during World War II. After the war, civilian Jeep models adapted the same formula for ordinary drivers. People soon discovered that the tough little four-wheel-drive vehicle could take them camping, along remote trails, and well beyond paved roads.

6. Land Rover Series I
The original Land Rover was created as a useful postwar vehicle for farms, public agencies, and workers in remote places. Thanks to its rough-and-tumble qualities, it soon caught the attention of explorers. A journey from London to Singapore in two Series I vehicles between 1955 and 1956 helped build its reputation as a dependable expedition vehicle that could handle long, demanding routes.
7. Mercedes-Benz G-Class
The G-Class was developed as a capable off-road vehicle for civilian, governmental, rescue, and security work. Over time, Mercedes added a touch of luxury to the vehicle, and it became popular with wealthy buyers who appreciated its comfort, bold road presence, and unmistakable boxy shape.
8. Hummer H1
The civilian Hummer was based on the Humvee, which was designed to carry military personnel and equipment across warzones. Arnold Schwarzenegger’s enthusiasm helped encourage the development of a version that private buyers could drive on public roads. It soon became associated with celebrities, conspicuous spending, and the excess of the 1990s.

9. Lamborghini LM002
Lamborghini’s off-road development began with the Cheetah, an all-wheel-drive prototype intended for military applications. The production LM002 went in a far more extravagant direction, combining four-wheel drive and a V12 engine derived from the Countach. The unusual mix created an early high-performance luxury SUV at a time when powerful, expensive off-road vehicles were still a rare sight.
10. Toyota Hilux
The Hilux built its reputation as a practical pickup for farms, construction crews, businesses, and rural drivers. Its image grew even stronger after a television program put a high-mileage 1988 model through a brutal series of tests. The truck ended up surviving seawater, fire, heavy impacts, and a collapsing building, helping to cement the Hilux’s reputation as a pickup that could take an extraordinary amount of punishment.
11. Ford Transit
The Transit was introduced as a flexible commercial van that could carry passengers or cargo. Those qualities made it valuable to businesses, though they also gave it an unwanted connection with crime. In 1972, London police called it “Britain’s most wanted van” because of its reputation in bank raids.
12. Chevrolet Impala
Chevrolet sold the Impala as a roomy, stylish full-size car for mainstream American buyers. Models from the early 1960s later became prominent in lowrider culture. Builders added hydraulic suspensions, detailed paintwork, custom upholstery, chrome, and engraving. These familiar family sedans became expressions of personal taste and artistic skill.
13. Ford Bronco
Ford introduced the Bronco as a compact four-wheel-drive vehicle suited to hunting, fishing, camping, and off-roading. On June 17, 1994, a white 1993 Bronco XLT appeared in the O.J Simpson pursuit. The slow-moving chase became one of the decade’s most memorable television events, permanently linking the Bronco with the case.
14. DeLorean DMC-12
The DMC-12 was meant to launch John DeLorean’s independent sports-car company. Unfortunately, the company collapsed after a short production run. Back to the Future later turned it into a time machine, giving the unsuccessful sports car a lasting place in popular culture.
15. Aston Martin DB5
The DB5 was built as an elegant, high-performance grand tourer for drivers who wanted to travel long distances in speed and comfort. Its appearance in 1964’s Goldfinger gave it a completely different identity, complete with an ejector seat, a smoke screen, revolving license plates, and other gadgets. Those features made the DB5 the car most closely associated with James Bond and one of the most recognizable vehicles ever seen on screen.
16. Pontiac Aztek
Pontiac marketed the Aztek as a sport recreational vehicle with flexible cargo space, available all-wheel drive, and accessories suited to camping. Its unusual appearance made it a fitting vehicle for Walter White in Breaking Bad. During the show’s early episodes, the Aztek matched the character’s suburban life so well that it became an unforgettable part of his story.
17. Cadillac Miller-Meteor
The 1959 Cadillac Miller-Meteor used for Ecto-1 began as a professional combination car designed for ambulance and funeral-service work. Ghostbusters gave the long Cadillac a much more colorful assignment. White-and-red paint, warning lights, and equipment mounted across the roof transformed it into the team’s ghost-hunting vehicle.

18. Lotus Esprit
The Lotus Esprit was a lightweight, mid-engine sports car known for its sharp, wedge-shaped body and very low stance. In 1977’s The Spy Who Loved Me, a specially built screen vehicle drove into the water and transformed into a submarine. The scene connected the Esprit with one of James Bond’s best-known escapes.
19. Reliant Regal Supervan III
The three-wheeled Reliant Regal Supervan III gave small businesses an inexpensive, lightweight vehicle with a fiberglass body that wouldn’t rust. A yellow example later became closely associated with Del Boy and Rodney in Only Fools and Horses.
20. Volvo 1800S
Volvo created the P1800 family to give the brand a sleek touring car alongside its practical sedans. Irv Gordon’s 1966 Volvo 1800S later traveled more than 3.2 million miles with one owner, turning the stylish coupe into a widely recognized example of outstanding automotive longevity.
