Few icons of 1950s Hollywood can summon up imagery faster than James Dean slouched over a fancy sports car. He seemed destined for superstardom in his role as the ultimate rebel who didn't care about anything. But his promising career was tragically ended by a silver Porsche 550 Spyder. Allegedly, though, this car's story of terror didn't end there; it proceeded to tear through ten years of horrific misfortune.

Some would chalk this story up to Hollywood hearsay or an elaborate publicity stunt to keep Dean in the spotlight. It can be difficult to believe that something as outlandish as a demon car could exist. I mean, who even thinks like that anymore? But when you look at all the strange circumstances this one car has been through, it's hard not to at least raise an eyebrow.

A Warning Ignored and a Fatal Turn

Before the fateful day in September 1955, James Dean ran into fellow actor Alec Guinness outside a popular Los Angeles restaurant. When Dean proudly showed off his new Porsche, Guinness reportedly felt a sudden, inexplicable wave of dread wash over him. He famously warned Dean that if he got into that car, he would be found post-mortem inside it within a week. It's haunting to realize that exactly seven days later, the young actor perished in a head-on collision at a remote California intersection.

The accident itself occurred while Dean was traveling to a car race in Salinas, accompanied by his mechanic, Rolf Wütherich. As the sun began to set over the highway, a Ford Tudor pulled out into the path of the speeding Porsche, resulting in a devastating impact. While the driver of the Ford and the mechanic survived their injuries, Dean passed away almost instantly from the sheer force of the crash. You can still visit the site today, where a lonely memorial stands as a reminder of the day his car claimed its first and most famous victim.

After the wreckage was cleared, the mangled remains of the car were sold to a professional customizer named George Barris. As the car was being unloaded at his shop, it allegedly slipped from its trailer and crushed the legs of a mechanic who was standing nearby. This was merely the opening act for a car that seemed determined to inflict pain on anyone who dared to touch its silver skin. You'd think a twice-wrecked car would be destined for the scrap heap, but its dark journey was actually just beginning.

The Trail of Mechanical Mayhem

George Barris would eventually sell the Porsche's chassis, doors, and windows to other racers looking for quality parts. Two doctors bought the drivetrain of Dean's infamous car to use for their own race vehicles. During a race in Pomona, one doctor passed away when his car flipped over, while the other had his own car stall for no apparent reason. Legend says that the spirit of the Spyder was imparted to each of the race cars to continue cursing others.

The tires taken from Dean's car were sold to another individual to use on his personal vehicle. Both of these tires are said to have blown out at the same time, causing his car to veer violently off the road. Coincidences like these are strange enough when they happen by themselves, but what do you do when you start linking dozens of them together? Whoever came into contact with something that was once part of Dean's Porsche seemed to be punished in some way.

George Barris stored the Porsche's body in his own personal garage until it too started wreaking havoc. At one point, a fire mysteriously broke out in his shop, burning down every vehicle but the Porsche. When the car was being moved for display purposes, it fell from its hanging rack and broke a teenage attendee's hip. Stories of the Spyder reached a fever pitch by this point, with people now convinced the car was terrorizing others willingly.

The Disappearing Act of a Legend

By the late 1950s, the California Highway Patrol decided to use the wreckage as a macabre centerpiece for a traveling highway safety presentation. They hoped that the sight of the crushed Porsche would discourage young drivers from speeding on public roads. However, the car continued to cause trouble by falling off its transport trucks and causing several minor accidents during its journey across the country. You'd think the authorities would have given up on the exhibit after the car reportedly ended up with a truck driver in a freak unloading accident.

In 1960, the remains of the vehicle were being shipped back to Los Angeles from a safety exhibit in Florida via a sealed freight car. When the train finally arrived at its destination, and officials broke the seals on the doors, the car had completely vanished. There were no signs of forced entry, and the heavy wreckage was far too large for a simple thief to carry away unnoticed. To this day, the whereabouts of the most haunted car in history remain one of the greatest unsolved mysteries in the world.
