The Worst of 2013 to 2022
There are plenty of recent-ish used cars that make for reliable vehicles, and these 20 are definitely not them. In fact, these cars are known for their worse-than-average reliability and concerning performance. So with that in mind, you’ll want to avoid these cars and quickly get rid of one if you already own one.

1. 2015 Audi A3
The reason people are discouraged from used Audis is because they’re often an expensive financial decision. You’ll be spending more on maintenance and repairs than you want, and with this model in particular, you’re running a likelier risk of things going wrong. This model, in particular, also has expensive regular maintenance issues to add to the burden.
2. 2017 BMW 2 Series
While these cars can be solid, they come with the issue of expensive and demanding maintenance. You can never skimp on fluid changes, spark plugs, and filters, which are very pricey if you can’t handle them yourself. For those price points, you’re better off getting something else.
3. 2013 Buick Enclave
Both the Enclave and the GMC Acadia (which is further on this list) made the same big mistake. They share the same terrible engine in terms of reliability. Even if you have a Buick that works just fine, note that it's not the common experience. This model is prone to overheating and transmission, and engine replacements.
4. 2013 Cadillac SRX
While it’s a nice car and popular among some fans, just be ready for those very costly repairs. Even if you love your Cadillac, you can’t argue how often they need replacements or repairs. From faulty engines to transmissions going out to headlight replacements, there’s a lot that can go wrong here.
5. 2020 Chevrolet Bolt
When it comes to the Bolt, it's the same problems that keep showing up. Mostly involving the EV features, consumers report issues with electric/hybrid battery pack failure and cooling. Additionally, there are common problems with charging and not charging fully.
6. 2015 Chrysler 200
This model is notoriously hated, and if, for some reason, you love your car, the statistics are very much against you. It had high amounts of transmission problems, engine problems, and electrical problems. In fact, it's a bit of a running joke how bad this car is.
7. 2019 Volkswagen Atlas
This car has suffered from recalls, and its reputation has taken hit after hit. The biggest offenders are problems with the sunroof, brakes, and electrical system malfunctions. Volkswagen, unfortunately, has quite a low score as a manufacturer.
8. 2013 Fiat 500
With this model, it's only a matter of time before something goes wrong. On the bright side, when you do end up replacing that wheel bearing, brake, or ignition coil, you won’t be paying as much as you would for a BMW. That being said, this car has mixed reviews at best, especially if you’re a frequent driver.
9. 2022 Ford Bronco
Ford is a fan favorite for many, but the 2022 Bronco might be one to avoid for a variety of reasons. The build itself is of poor quality, which is what makes the ride feel shaky at best. Plus, there’s no manual transmission for the big engine.
10. 2018 GMC Acadia
If you just look at the history of Acadia, it's clear to see that its reliability history is terrible. While it’s been trying to improve in recent years, it suffers from the aforementioned engine, the Enclave has. It is on the cheaper side when it comes to service costs, but it should be anyone's long-term car.
11. 2019 Genesis G70
While some people like their G70s, they can’t deny the issues they’ve had. This includes things from coolant leaking to speed sensor replacements. These repairs can run up the price, even at very low mileages. The original battery is also known to cause problems, with some opting to replace it.
12. 2018 Honda Civic
One look at Consumer Reports makes it clear that the 2018 model, in particular, crumpled in terms of reliability. It was the first generation with a new turbo that many struggled to maintain. The car also had issues with oil dilution that owners had to keep an eye on, making it an annoying pick.
13. 2017 Hyundai Elantra GT
While Hyundai is a well-known and loved brand, the 6th generation in particular suffered. Many people report all sorts of problems from oil burning, spotty paint jobs, and, not to mention, the infamous failing ignition coil packs. This is actually from a manufacturing defect, which is why many prefer to avoid it.

14. 2016 Jeep Cherokee
The 2016 model in particular is probably a terrible pick, but Jeep in itself as a brand has issues. While the look and reputation are one thing, the actual reliability of the car is questionable. The build quality is less than that of the Grand Cherokee. Additionally, people report issues with zero pickup and sluggish driving.
15. 2015 Volvo V60
There’s nothing more reassuring than a car with 2 vehicle recall alerts on it. Aside from these recall issues, the reliability has always been spotty at best. Main issues include malfunctioning electrical accessories like the keyless entry and tire pressure monitor.
16. 2021 Lincoln Aviator
This car is very average, mostly because while some people have okay experiences, the other half have major issues. While it can be comfortable and fuel-efficient, you’re going to be suffering in terms of a lackluster infotainment system, manufacturing quality issues, and a faulty electrical system. So maybe go for a different car instead.
17. 2020 Tesla Model S
If you look at Consumer Reports, it’s clear that the 2020 Model S is one of the lowest-rated Tesla cars there is. It struggles with everything from the drive system to the climate system to noise leaks. Even the body hardware is of low quality, contributing to its very low reliability score.
18. 2021 Mercedes-Benz E-Class
While some people adore the E-Class, there is actually a reason the 2021 model in particular performed so poorly. While 2020 and 2022 were okay, 2021 suffered from parts manufactured during COVID, which were harder to source and manufacture. This led to a dip in quality that translated to poor reliability.
19. 2016 Nissan Altima
Nissan, as a brand, has a shaky reputation already, but the 2016 Altima is one you’ll want to avoid at all costs. There are serious concerns about the transmission giving out, which was a very common problem plaguing the model. It’s not worth the risk when there are better car choices out there.
20. 2013 Ram 1500
If you’d prefer to get a truck, then this probably isn’t the one for you. The model has had 12 recall alerts and scores relatively low in reliability. The biggest offenders are the suspension and difficulty with power steering. Then, when you do have to make replacements, they can take a while to arrive, too.
